Balladist, author, lawyer, poet, soldier and horseman, Paterson collected bush ballads from rural newspapers and correspondents in the 1890s. These were included in his influential Composed and sung in the Bushranging, Digging, and Overlanding Days (1905) and in several subsequent new editions edited by him into the 1930s. He was, of course, the author of the poem that became the lyrics for the original version of ‘Waltzing Matilda’ and many of his other works have passed into oral tradition.
