JOHN MANIFOLD 1915-1985

Poet and musicologist John Streeter Manifold collected, researched and performed Australian bush ballads, published in The Penguin Australian Songbook (1964). He also advanced theories about the origins and transmission of Australian folksong, most notably in Who Wrote the Ballads? (1964). In the 1950s he collected a version of ‘Waltzing Matilda’, usually referred to as the Buderim variant of the Queensland version.
