DOROTHY HOWARD 1902-1996

American academic folklorist who visited Australia in the mid-1950s to collect children’s folklore. Her work was a strong influence on the collection and study of children’s lore in Australia, particularly on the work of June Factor and Gwenda Beed Davey who established the Australian Children’s Folklore Collection, now housed at Museum Victoria:

Howard was a noted folklorist, winning many awards and publishing widely during her lifetime. There are many articles and books on her life and work available through online search. Historian Kate Darian-Smith and folklorist June Factor published Child's Play: Dorothy Howard and the Folklore of Australian Children (2005).
