English-born American academic folklorist, anthropologist and musician who visited Australia in the 1950s and 60s and published Down Among the Wild Men (1972), a study of his encounters with Aboriginal Australians. He also published Australia: The Last Frontier (1973) as well as other relevant, if controversial, works. He released an lp of Australian Folksongs and Ballads (Smithsonian Folkways, 1959).
