JOSEPH JACOBS 1854-1916

Australian-born folklorist and historian known for his work on international folktales, fables, Jewish culture and Biblical history. He and was one of the leading scholars of his generation, editor of The Folklore Society’s journal, Folklore he published many books and articles related to folklore, including anthologies of  folk tales such as English Fairy Tales(1890) aimed at a popular readership. Although he left Australia at an early age to study, he included in his collections a number of stories told to him as a child. These constitute some of the earliest, possibly the only, extant folktale texts of English folktales told in Australia in the mid-nineteenth century.
